Relevant monitor parameters can be determined using suitable test images. These parameters are first measured to initially determine the suitability of the monitor for the desired task. Subsequently, and repeatedly, test images can be used to check the subjectively determined quality and consistency.
First, the values to be determined by measurement are obtained. Using a luminance meter, the exact procedure is carried out as described in DIN 6868-157:
1. The veil luminance Lamb is determined in the center of the screen with the monitor switched off. The measurement procedure should be carried out as described in DIN 6868-157.
2. The minimum display luminance Lmin is determined with the monitor and computer switched on and a completely black image in the center of the screen. The sensor is placed directly on the display.
3. The maximum display luminance Lmax is determined with the monitor switched on and a white image in the center of the screen. The sensor is placed directly on the display.
4. The veil luminance Lamb is added to the values from (2) and (3).
5. The contrast in the center r' is calculated from the ratio of the two values calculated in (4).
6. Using a suitable test image with an 11-step luminance scale with 10% increments in brightness, the brightness of the 11 steps is recorded and the deviation from the desired monitor characteristic curve GSDF is determined.
7. The background light E is measured using an illuminance meter. The procedure and the measuring device must comply with DIN 6868-157.
There are several devices to measure the luminance level, very practical is the Kowotest Densorapid DL, a calibrated measurement device for optical Density and Luminance in cd/m² . KowotestDensorapidD.png - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)
8. The visual tests are done with a test image similar to SMPTE or TG18-OIQ from DIN 6868-157. This test image should be displayed in full format on the monitor so that a 1:1 image is obtained. Enlargement or reduction of a static image is not permitted. Therefore a program for a suitable image which fits on the complete screen is recommended. In Visual qualification a description of the tests and a software program is provided.
