Before selecting a monitor for an application, you should first determine which monitor class the planned use of the monitor falls into. The following table lists all minimum requirements for this monitor class: • Minimum luminance Lmax at DDLmax • Minimum luminance ratio at DDLmin and DDLmax, including veil luminance • Minimum score from the visual test with the test image (see Visual assessment of monitor quality) • Minimum number of monitor pixels in width and height • Maximum deviation from the DICOM Gray Scale Display Function (GSDF) characteristic curve • Maximum pixel size of the monitor pixels (color monitor: size of the RGB pixel triple); the distance from pixel center to pixel center (pixel pitch) is taken. • Minimum size of the active monitor area • Required evaluation environment class (may also be better)
When selecting a monitor, the data can be taken from the manufacturer's data sheet prior to purchase. Before use in radiographic evaluation, these values must be verified or calculated metrologically and visually (e.g., contrast or pixel size). The measured values serve as a reference for future measurements, and deviations of more than 20% must result in error handling.
