Reference images are important for ASTM, they are the reference for different applications to show possible flaws and their severity level. Many contracts base on the reference classification of imperfections in industry worldwide. In the beginning reference images were films which the user can place beside the film with his test object side by side and decide the type of flaw and severity level. In the year 2001 ASTM starts a project to digitize the films and create digital reference images out of the films. The digital images come on DVD and can be unpacked by the user based on his required spatial resolution by the software provided with the DVDs.

There are two ASTM Standard Guides for Reference Images (E07.02)
E431 Interpretation of Radiographs of Semiconductors and Related Devices (Film)
E592 Obtainable ASTM Equivalent Penetrameter Sensitivity for Radiography of Steal Plates ¼ to 2“ Thick with X Ray and 1 to 6“ Thick with Cobalt-60 (Film)

ASTM Standard Reference Radiographs (Films) in (E07.02)
E155 for Inspection of Aluminum and Magnesium Castings
E186 for Heavy-Walled (2 to 4.5 in. (50.8 to 114 mm)) Steel Castings
E192 of Investment Steel Castings for Aerospace Applications
E242 for Appearances of Radiographic Images as Certain Parameters are Changed
E272 for High-Strength Copper-Base and Nickel-Copper Alloy Castings
E280 for Heavy-Walled (4.5 to 12 in. (114 to 305 mm)) Steel Castings
E310 for Tin Bronze Castings
E390 for Steel Fusion Welds
E446 for Steel Castings up to 2“ in Thickness
E505 for Inspection of Aluminum and Magnesium Die Castings
E689 for Ductile Iron Castings
E802 for Gray Iron Castings Up to 4.5 in. (114 mm) in Thickness
E1320 for Titanium Castings
E1648 for Examination of Aluminum Fusion Welds
E1936 for Evaluating the Performance of Radiographic Digitization Systems
E1955 for Soundness of Welds in Steel by Comparison to Graded ASTM Reference Radiographs

ASTM Standard Digital Reference Images in (E07.02)
E2422 for Inspection of Aluminum Castings [digital version of E155 part aluminum]
E2660 for Inspection of Investment Steel Castings for Aerospace [digital version of E192]
E2669 for Inspection of Titanium Castings [digital version of E1320]
E2868 for Steel Castings up to 2" (50.8 mm) in Thickness [digital version of E446]
E2869 for Magnesium Castings [digital version of E155 part magnesium]
E2973 for Inspection of Aluminum and Magnesium Die Castings [digital version of E505]
E3030 for inspection of Heavy-Walled (2 to 4.5 inch (50.8 to 114 mm)) Steel Castings [digital version of E186]
WK61631 for High-Strength Copper-Base and Nickel-Copper Alloy Castings [digital version of E272 - administrativ hold at the moment]
WK61632 for for Tin Bronze Castings [digital version of E310 - administrativ hold at the moment]
